Hi everyone,
This is a special alert for our Indian readers, though it applies globally—cybersecurity knows no boundaries. The Indian government’s CERT-In has issued a High Severity Alert for Android devices, warning of potential hacking threats due to vulnerabilities in the operating system. The alert affects devices running Android 12, 12L, 13, and 14, putting millions of users at risk.
What’s at Risk?
CERT-In identified that smartphones using Google Play System Update, ARM components, Qualcomm components, and other technologies within the Android frameworks are particularly vulnerable. This includes many of the newer devices launched in the last three years.
How to Check Your OS Version
To see if your device is affected, go to your phone’s Settings > About and check your operating system version. If you’re using one of the affected versions, it’s time to be extra vigilant.
Tips to Protect Yourself
- Update Your Device: Make sure your Android phone is running the latest security updates. Go to Settings > Software Update and install any pending updates.
- Use Trusted Apps Only: Only download apps from the Google Play Store, and avoid installing APK files from unknown sources.
- Enable Play Protect: Keep Google Play Protect active to scan for malicious apps. Go to Play Store > Play Protect and turn on scanning.
- Monitor Device Permissions: Regularly review app permissions and disable those that seem unnecessary or suspicious.
- Use Security Software: Install a reputable security app to keep your device protected against malware and other threats.
