Hi everyone,

I know this isn’t exactly a security tip, but it empowers you to enhance your home security without spending a dime! If you have an old Android phone lying around, you can turn it into a functional security camera. Here’s how to do it.

Step 1: Install a Security Camera App

First, you’ll need a reliable app to monitor your space. A great option is Alfred. It provides live feeds, motion detection, cloud storage, and more—all from your old phone! Download the Alfred app on both your new and old phones. Set the old phone as “Camera” and the new phone as “Viewer.” Sign in using the same Google account on both.

Other App Alternatives:

  • Faceter: Quick setup and cloud storage.
  • EpocCam: A great choice for iPhones.
  • iVCam: Offers various customization options.

Step 2: Choose a Location

Pick a spot that you want to monitor, like an entryway or backyard. If you have multiple old phones, you can set up a multi-camera system for thorough coverage.

Step 3: Mount and Power Your Camera

Use a small tripod or car mount to hold the phone. Consider adding a wide-angle lens for a broader view. Make sure it’s close to a power source since streaming video drains the battery quickly.

Important Security Considerations

Older phones eventually lose security updates and become vulnerable. Before setting up your phone as a camera, wipe all personal data and automate any available updates. Set a timeline for when you’ll retire the device.

This is a cost-effective way to enhance security, but always remember that older devices can have security flaws. For added peace of mind, scan your network periodically with the Incognito app and contact us if you need help.

All the best,
