We are receiving reports that the U.S. Army this week has banned the social media app TikTok from government-owned devices as questions over the platform’s relationship with China grows.
TikTok, a social media app that is used to create and share videos, is owned by a Chinese company and despite its popularity (the app has over 1 Billion installs worldwide) privacy experts have started to question how data from TikTok is being collected, used and whether it is being censored by China’s government.
The following is taken from a recent press release on Military.com
"The U.S. Army has reversed its policy on TikTok, Military.com has learned, banning soldiers from using the popular Chinese social media app, which is now considered a security threat."It is considered a cyber threat," Lt. Col. Robin Ochoa, an Army spokeswoman, told Military.com. "We do not allow it on government phones."
I will keep you posted on this story but at this stage we recommend that you stop using this app until we can do some testing.
