Hi guys,

Before you spend money on that celebrity-endorsed premium cookware, weight loss product, or can’t-miss money-making opportunity, take a moment. Are you sure a celebrity or influencer is really endorsing that product? Scammers are increasingly using fake celebrity testimonials and endorsements, complete with doctored video and audio, to generate buzz and profits.

“But it looks and sounds real, so it must be true,” right? Not so much. The technology to make fake endorsement videos is improving all the time. Your best bet is to do some research on your own. Before you click and buy, follow this advice:

How to Protect Yourself:

  • Verify Testimonials: Search online using the celebrity’s name, the product, and words like “scam” or “fake.” See what others are saying.
  • Avoid Pressure Tactics: Scammers want you to act fast, claiming it’s a limited-time deal. Take your time to research and think it through.
  • Consult Healthcare Professionals: Before buying dietary supplements, ask your doctor. The government doesn’t review supplements for safety or effectiveness before they hit the market.
  • Understand Investment Risks: Be wary of claims about investments with guaranteed returns. All investments carry some risk.

Examples of Fake Endorsements:

  • Oprah Winfrey’s Weight Loss Gummies: Oprah herself has warned fans about scammers using her image to sell weight loss products she never endorsed.
  • Elon Musk’s Crypto Schemes: Scammers have used fake videos of Elon Musk to promote cryptocurrency schemes.
