Hi everyone, hope you’re having a great start to the day. Things are busy on our side as we track new scam tactics and emerging malware threats, but overall, it’s always rewarding to stay ahead of these criminals.

Today, I want to highlight yet another serious crypto scam—this time targeting a 75-year-old pensioner in Aberdeen, Scotland, who lost a six-figure sum to fraudsters. Police have arrested two men in connection with the scam, but the reality is this is just one case among thousands.

Crypto Scams Are More Lucrative Than Ransomware

• Scammers frequently target older adults who may not be familiar with cryptocurrency security.

• Many scams involve remote access software, tricking victims into allowing full control over their finances.

• Fraudsters often impersonate banks or government agencies, convincing victims to move funds for “safekeeping.”

Fake investment schemes—such as liquidity mining scams or bogus forex trading—have led to massive financial losses.

• In 2023 alone, cybercriminals stole $5.6 billion through crypto scams, with a 45 percent increase from the previous year.

How to Protect Yourself

Never allow remote access to your device. No legitimate financial institution will ask you to install remote control software.

Verify any investment opportunity. If it sounds too good to be true, it’s a scam.

Be skeptical of unsolicited crypto advice. Scammers often pose as financial experts or government officials.

Never move funds based on a “security warning.” Banks and agencies do not request transfers for safekeeping.

Use hardware wallets for cryptocurrency storage. Keeping your crypto offline adds an extra layer of protection.

Educate elderly family members. Many scams target older adults who are less familiar with digital threats.
