Greenbone Networks has released details of new research into the security of the servers used by health providers across the world to store images of X-rays as well as CT, MRI and other medical scans.
Of the 2,300 medical image archive systems worldwide that Greenbone analyzed between mid-July and early September 2019, 590 of them were freely accessible on the internet, together containing 24.3 million data records from patients located in 52 different countries.
Most records included the following personal and medical details:
First name and surname date of birthDate of examination scope of the investigation type of imaging procedureAttending physicianInstitute/clinicNumber of generated images
Of the 2,300 medical image archive systems worldwide that Greenbone analyzed between mid-July and early September 2019, 590 of them were freely accessible on the internet, together containing 24.3 million data records from patients located in 52 different countries.
This data could be used to commit identity theft, highly-specialized phishing campaigns or even for extortion, where medical information is weaponized to blackmail people in the public eye.”
If you are worried that your healthcare data has been exposed I advise you to write to any healthcare provider that hold any information on you and ask them to confirm that your data has not been involved in any breach and also how they are keeping your information safe.
