Hi Guys,

If you are a user of Instagram please make sure you are running the latest version. The now fixed vulnerability could have enabled attackers to perform remote code execution and access a victim’s camera, microphone, and other components.

In order to be infected all the attacker would have to do is send you a specially sized image file and once the image was in your camera role they could have executed the remote attack.

The scary thing is that you do not have to do anything at all in order for this attack to happen. All you have to do is receive an image onto your phone (via email, WhatsApp, txt message etc).

In addition to updating you can also think about the following as well:

  • Do not allow the auto download of images onto your phone.
  • Only accept and open images and videos (and click on links) from people you know and trust.
  • Do not open any of these joke images/memes or videos that spread around social media. They may make you smile but can also open a backdoor onto your device at the same time. You have no idea what is under the hood of the image waiting to attack. Be careful.
  • Don’t click on links unless you are sure you trust the source.

Thanks and have a great day.
