Hi everyone,
Artificial intelligence (AI) is advancing at a staggering pace, and it’s hard to ignore its presence in our daily lives. You might have read in my previous articles about some genuinely alarming developments, such as artificial voice and image cloning and the emergence of deep fakes. These artificial creations can look and sound indistinguishably real, leading us towards a world where discerning fact from fiction may become increasingly difficult.
But the influence of AI doesn’t stop there. Law enforcement agencies globally are employing AI to identify criminals. This technology not only uses predictive crime and policing to profile individuals based on their past actions and social media posts, but it also anticipates whether they might commit crimes in the future. Imagine the chilling prospect of being arrested for a crime you haven’t yet committed—all because a computer predicted it!
Furthermore, AI-driven facial recognition is being used to identify suspects from videos captured at crime scenes. Though this sounds promising in theory, it’s riddled with problems. A recent news story illustrates just how concerning these issues can be. You can read about it here.
To sum it up, an expecting mother in America was wrongly identified by a facial recognition system as a criminal, leading to her arrest. She endured three harrowing days in jail before the authorities acknowledged their mistake. Sadly, this is not an isolated incident, but part of a disturbing trend where facial recognition falsely accuses innocent individuals.
We are indeed venturing into a brave new world with the rise of AI. These technological advancements, while exciting, also come with potential dangers that must be navigated with care and understanding.
