Hi Guys,

The team at Sophos has made us aware of a new Gmail scam that currently targets thousands of people worldwide. The scam itself looks very professional, so that it will fool many people. Please be on the lookout. 

How Does the scam work?

Part one: You receive an email that looks like it is from Google. The email will threaten you with account closure unless you verify your information.   

Here is an example of the email that you might receive:

Subject: De-Activation Alert!

Message body:

Dear Gmail Account User,

Due to the congestion in our Gmail database, We will be shutting down all unused accounts before on the 30th of June. You will have to re-confirm your account as soon as possible to enable us upgrade your account before the deadline date.

To confirm your account kindly fill the account verification form.

After Following the instructions in the sheet, your account will not be interrupted and will continue as normal. Thanks for your attention to this request.

Part two:  If you click on this link, you will be brought to a Google documents page where you will be asked to enter the following:

* Last Name

* First Name

* Email

* Password

* Date of Birth

* Country 

* ZIP Code

Part three: As soon as you enter this information, the scammer will log in to your account and change your password so that you can no longer gain access. Once inside, they can do anything and even try to extort money to get your account back. 

How Do You Stay Safe?

* Do not open this email 

* If you do open it, do not click the link

* If you do click the link, do not fill in any information

* User our website checker to tell you if the webpage is safe or not.
